The Volkswagen Arteon 2020, a large car, received the TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Road Safety Insurance Institute thanks to improved headlights.
To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK 2020 award, a vehicle must score well on six crash ratings, including small overlap on the driver’s side, small overlap on the passenger side, moderate overlap, side, roof resistance and headrest. You will also need expanded or higher ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accident prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
The 2019 Arteon performed poorly for its three headlight variants. The 2020 model received good marks for the curve-adapting LED projector headlights, which are supplied with the SEL, SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line panels. This last package also receives an additional credit for high beam support.
Headlights that come with the SE basic equipment are badly rated, so the model cannot qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK + award and good or acceptable headlights are required across the board.
Arteon’s Standard Front Crash Prevention System receives a superior rating for the institute’s vehicle-to-vehicle rating and an advanced rating for the vehicle-to-pedestrian rating.
The Arteon avoided collisions in vehicle-to-vehicle tests at 12 and 25 mph. When assessing vehicle to pedestrian, he avoided collisions or reduced his speed significantly to mitigate the effects of tests where an adult and a child cross the street in front of the vehicle. However, in tests where an adult walked on the road in the same direction as the vehicle, the speed could not be reduced.
